  Sat Oct 18, 2008 Afternoon 1 pm - 4:30 pm $75
Snacks and a beverages will be served.

Danielle will introduce you to the processes and techniques that she and Aileen use in producing their layered wax panels. See photo’s. You will also have the opportunity to create your own encaustic project using an image of your choice. At the end of this workshop you will have a finished piece to hang on your wall or give away. No previous experience is required, the only prerequisite is an open mind and willingness to experiment! Each participant will produce a layered wax piece on their choice of either a single 6X6 or two 3X4 panels (diptych) which will be provided.

What to Gather:
  1. choose two-three images you might want to work with.
  2. copy/print these images onto the middle of a piece of natural fibre paper (e.g. rice paper, hand-made paper, etc) leaving as much margin space as possible (your image printed onto an 8.5 X11 piece of paper is a good guide). Translucent-type paper works best for layering (available at Opus or Muse in Molly's Lane, Gibsons).
  3. An alternative to the natural fibre paper is to bring a photo (min 6X8 or larger to allow you to crop the image where you want).
  4. Think about and /or bring any words /phrases/ poetry you may want to layer on top of your image. These can be printed onto paper, cut from magazines, etc.
  5. Bring an art-smock to work in.
We will provide all other materials. Click here for photos and see www.peeledonionpress.com

Art of Transference - The Ultimate Image Transfer Class - Christina Lazar Schuler
  Sat Oct 25, 2008 All Day 9:30 am - 4:30 pm $110
You will need to bring a bag lunch. Snacks and beverages will be served.

Image transfer is a much used technique in mixed media, collage, paper and memory arts today. Through Christina’s image transfer teaching experience, she has learned that image transfer techniques need to be learned VISUALLY to ensure success. In this ‘all you ever wanted to know about image transfer’ class you will learn how to make your own image transfers using 10 DIFFERENT techniques covered over a full day of experimenting and demonstrations. Throughout the workshop you will be transferring provided printed vintage images and stock photography onto a variety of surfaces including watercolour paper, vintage paper, tile, fabric and metal using different mediums and techniques. We will also discuss ways to incorporate image transfer into your artwork, memory projects, and ideas for gift giving using the taught techniques.

NOTE: this is a technique/process-based class where you will create a large number of samples. Also please note that one method of transfer produces STRONG fumes. If you are sensitive or allergic to chemical smells, please consider this carefully before signing up for the workshop.

Workshop includes an Instructors Kit with the following:
  • all printed image supplies including:
    4 sheets printed transparencies,
    2 sheets printed glossy paper,
    2 sheets laser printed
    2 sheets Image Transfer Material
  • all mediums including Kroma Gel, Matte and Gesso mediums
  • fabric, metal and tile for transferring to
  • detailed 25 page manual
  • 2 Polaroid exposures per student
Students to bring the following to class:
  • brayer - this is critical - everyone must have a brayer!
  • scissors for cutting image transfers and printed images apart
  • watercolour paper - cold or hot press it is the students choice. if purchasing cold press, ensure that the surface is relatively smooth like a 'vellum' finish. Canson has a good student grade 9x12 pad that is very reasonable. we'll use between 6-12 sheets throughout the day.
  • 1-2" chip brush [the kind you buy at Home Depot in a bag of 5 in paint section] or similar. no foam brushes please
  • containers for water
  • paper towels/shop rags for clean-up
